In 1955, a black woman named Rosa Parks was arrested in Montgomery, Alabama,when she refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white passenger.This event led to a boycott of the buses in Montgomery by thousands of black people.An organization was formed to run the boycott, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., became its president.The bus boycott lasted a year and encouraged many other black people to protest against segregation.Attempts to change the laws on segregation became known as the Civil Rights Movement.Young people were an important part of the Civil Rights Movement.They practiced peaceful protests, such as sit-ins, marches, and boycotts.
