The only sounds, echoing against the hills, came from the digging of the workmen.Chipping, shovelling, scraping, clearing.

As Carter watched and worried, the waterboy idly scratched at the soil.The rubble felt sharp and hot beneath his hands.His palms were thick with dust. He crouched, sweeping aside the dirt.More dirt beneath. And then more dirt. And then more.And then something hard. Something flat.

The waterboy swept faster, ignoring the sharpness of the stones.It was something wide, and flat, and made of stone.

He looked up, shielding his eyes from the fierce glare of the sun. "Mr Carter!" he yelled. "Mr Carter!"

Carter jumped to his feet and hurried over. Voices started up all around.Workmen stopped digging and looked towards the waterboy,who was beckoning wildly for people to come over and look.

"Probably found a fragment of a pot," they mumbled to themselves.

The waterboy dug at the earth with his hands. He could feel his heart pounding.Only minutes before, he'd been feeling that the search was pointless, but now... anything could happen.

Howard Carter joined him."Could be the top of a larger structure," said Carter, brushing sand aside frantically. It was a step.
