Chapter 3 The Drill

When they returned from the store, Chelsea's dad said,"We need to drill a hole to attach this bolt - hand me the drill, please, Chelsea."

Chelsea looked around the yard, but the tools were gone!"They're not here," she gasped. "Do you think someone stole them?" she asked, beginning to feel frightened.

Then she turned to Katie. "It's your fault," she told her. "You said not to put them away."

"We didn't have time," Katie fired back."You're the one who borrowed them, and that means they're your responsibility."

"It's Melita's job to put them away," Chelsea said, deciding to blame the girl they didn't know very well.

Now it was Melita's turn to be angry. "How come I'm suddenly responsible?" she shouted.

"Stop arguing," Chelsea's dad said, frowning at them."You'll have to tell Uncle Keith that you have lost his tools."

"Do you have a drill, Dad?" Chelsea asked hopefully.

"Another drill isn't the answer, Chelsea. You three have to take responsibility for your actions," he said as he walked away.

Chelsea sighed. There was no way they could finish the go-kart in time for the race.

"It's all your fault," Katie said to Chelsea. They wouldn't be champions - they weren't even going to race.

Chelsea sat down on the concrete and folded her arms. "No, it's your fault," she said angrily.

Melita complained that now she wouldn't get to be the driver, and soon they were all grousing at each other.

"Hey, why are you fighting?" Uncle Keith's daughter, Jessica, asked curiously as she crossed the front lawn.

The three girls talked over each other, each trying to convince Jessica of their own version of the events.

"Are you sure the tools were stolen?" Jessica asked.

"Well, they were here when we left, and they're gone now!" Katie said.
