"Ouch! Ow, ow, ow!" "What is it?" asked Hania.It was early morning and not yet light, but Adam's yells had woken them all with a start.
"You tell me," moaned Adam. "I can't lift my head."
Claudia went to look and told him he was stuck to the floor of the cave.
"I think it's the sticky sap from the plants we were braiding," said Mario.He began gently sawing at Adam's hair with a sharp rock.
"I think the heat from Adam's body must have made the sap run.It's seeped through his hair and hardened as it touched the cold stone floor of the cave," explained Hania.
"Glue!" said Claudia. "For our ladder!" cried Hania. "Adam, you're very resourceful!"
"But I didn't do anything!" protested Adam.
"Sleeping on a problem is one way to solve things," laughed Claudia."Now let's get to work. With any luck, we can have the ladder up against the barrier wallbefore the sun has risen and our tormentors return."
"Tormentors?" asked Adam. "The linodocs!" she told him with a shudder.
They glued the driftwood together as quickly as they could,but even with everyone helping, the sun was up by the time the ladder was ready.
"You first, Mario," said Claudia. "Then Adam. Then Hania. I'll follow." Claudia started to say something else, but the terrible shaking from yesterday started again.
