But I Want It!
Julia loved going to the store with Mom because they always had fun.Today they had to go to two stores.
First they went to the clothing store.Julia found a T-shirt that she liked.
“Mom, I need this T-shirt,” she said. “Could we get it?”
“You need it?” asked Mom.“I know you want it, but you don’t need it.”
Julia did not understand how wants and needs are different.
Mom said, “A need is something that you can’t live without.”
Julia looked at the T-shirts on the counter. She was sure that she couldn’t live without one of them.
“But I really do need one of these,” said Julia.
“Everyone needs clothes to wear,” said Mom, “but you have enough T-shirts at home.
You don’t need another one.
You need warm clothes for school this fall.”
Mom held up the T-shirt.
“A T-shirt is something you want,” she said.
“A want is something you wish that you could have, but it’s something you can live without.”
Julia saw a hat that she liked.“I know I need this hat,” she said.“I need it for school because my old one is worn out.”
“You already have a hat for school, and it looks fine,” said Mom.“You want the hat, but you don’t need it.”
Julia tried to think of something that she needed.
