Chapter 2 First Day
Cara wastes no time making a name for herself at school the next day.In the morning, I walk her to the office so she can register. And because she's two grades behind me, I'm not surprised our paths don't cross all morning.By lunch, however, the gossip begins.I'm done eating, so I take my book outside - it's a mystery I just can't put down - and read under a tree.
"Hey, Annie!" It's Gary Blackhill. He loves to talk, and I figure he's about to fulfill my expectations."You hear about your new roommate?" "What about her?"
"Well, Tony, whose sister's in her class, says that Ms. Darrow asked the new girl to introduce herself, and she says, 'You already know my name, so why don't you do it?'"
"Is that all? And for your information," I tell him, "her name is Cara."
"Whatever. But there's more. Later, they're taking turns reading sentences aloud, and she, like, refuses to do it."Gary gloats, like he's finding all this really amusing."And now, she's in the principal's office."
I roll my eyes and get up. "Maybe I'd better go see what's up."
"Good luck with that!" Gary says gleefully.
By the time I get to the office, Cara's already back in class.Patty, the secretary, leans forward over the counter and reports in a low voice,"Ms. Darrow just brought her here so she could talk to Principal Bluestone.First days can be awful for anyone."
On the way home, Cara doesn't say much.I remember what Gary said about her not wanting to read, and I wonder - with all the moving around - if she's having trouble keeping up.But you can't just go and ask someone that.
"Did Ms. Darrow give out a lot of homework today?" I ask.
Cara shrugs. "Kind of - I have to read a Social Studies chapter and do a worksheet, and read 20 pages in this novel."
I don't know why I'm starting to make Cara my worry.Living with Donnie is quite enough, thank you.He must have run home today, because when we arrive, he's already on the porch, pitching water balloons at us.
