That night, I slept badly - too much time thinking about Jennifer facing adversity.We'd always been different, and for the first time, I worried this was a bad thing.I kept going back and forth about how I felt, but I didn't come to any conclusions.

When I came downstairs, Jennifer looked fresh and happy, like she couldn't wait to start the day.

"Good morning, Martha," Dad said, glancing up from the newspaper.He gestured for Mom, Jennifer, and me to come closer and then held the newspaper so we could see it."A spokesman for the store said it's the company's policy to abide by local custom."

"Well," said Mom doubtfully, "I guess that's fair enough."

"But listen to this," said Dad."The spokesman also says if any group succeeds in changing the custom, 'We will of course go along with that.'"

"What custom?" I asked. "What's he talking about?"

"Segregation," said Jennifer. "But I thought segregation was the law," I said.

"Well, it says right here that there is no law in North Carolinathat says people of different races must be served at different counters," said Dad.
