Chapter 3 Telling the Truth

When I got home, I ran to my bedroom and pulled off my costume. My parents weren't home yet. I thought to myself that maybe I wouldn't get into trouble.

Oliver was still watching television. Tom was sitting on the couch next to Oliver. I was surprised.

Tom asked, "When are we going to the mall?"

I told Tom that we had already gone to the mall.

Tom said, "I couldn't find you, so I decided to wait. Oliver and I watched cartoons."

Oliver said, "Tom is my new big brother." Then Oliver stuck his tongue out at me.

Oliver was right. Tom had been a better brother to Oliver than I had been. I felt terrible.

A few minutes later, Mom and Dad came home, and Tom left.Dad said to me, "Thanks for taking care of Oliver." I looked over at Oliver. He was watching TV. I looked at the screen. There on the TV, I saw Maria and me at the Dragon Wings store!

Oliver looked at me and said, "That costume's much better than your costume."Oliver didn't recognize me in the costume. He didn't even know I had left the apartment. I was not going to get into trouble.

Mom looked at the TV screen and said, "That must be the crowd of people we saw at the mall.Look, it's those animal things Cameron likes."

"Mm-hmm," Dad said. It was clear to me that my parents did not recognize Maria and me in our costumes either.

Emma came into the room. Dad asked Emma, "Did you study a lot?Or did your brothers make trouble for you?"

"I was surprised, but the boys were great," Emma answered.Emma had not heard me yell that I was leaving. She didn't know that I had left the apartment either. No one knew I had left. It was unbelievable. I was answerable to no one.I was the luckiest kid in the world. So why did I feel so bad?
