Once his students had basic math skills, Escalante could teach them calculus.His program attracted more students every year.Two out of five students passed the Advanced Placement calculus test in 1979, followed by six out of eight the next year.

Escalante kept to his principles.He allowed no one to attend class without having done their homework, and hours of extra time were spent in class.

Escalante also looked out for his students beyond their academic lives.He understood their need for love and support.He insisted for example that they eat healthful food and make sure that they got plenty a rest.

Food for Thought

The links between poor nutrition and poor school performance are well known today.Many studies have shown that even skipping breakfast or eating junk food too often can have a lasting effect on students' results.

Escalante saw that nutrition played an important role in academic success.Due to this, he raised funds to make sure students had the money to eat properly.He talked to parents if he needed to and checked students' lunch trays for healthful foods.
