When Escalante said he was going to teach calculus, the principal laughed."Do you really think you can teach them that?" he asked.

Escalante believed these kids weren't doing well because they weren't expected to prevail.He was a trailblazer and was not afraid to try a new approach.He knew that if he showed his students he believed in them, they would learn.

The principal said Escalante was giving the students false hopes.He reminded the teacher that the students' parents couldn't help them with their homework.Most of the parents had dropped out of school.

"I will help my students," Escalante said. The principal agreed to let him try.

Why Calculus?

Calculus is a kind of math that is useful for exploring how things change.If you wanted to figure out how the temperature of water vapor changesas it turns into liquid water, you would use calculus.Escalante knew that scientists use calculus to find answers to this kind of problem.He knew that if his students had this skill, they could get better jobs.
