Ruth and Ritchie Tillerman were twins.They had just blown out the candle on their birthday cake.It was their twelfth birthday, but it didn't feel like a party.

It was 1933, four years after the start of the Great Depression.The Tillerman family was struggling to survive on their small farm.

Mr. Tillerman said, "We can't keep living like this.I figure if we don't do something soon, we'll have to move west to look for something better."

The next morning, the family saw a parade of automobiles pass by their farm.The cars and trucks were filled with boxes, and suitcases were tied to the roofs of the cars.Ruth waved, but no one waved back.

America and the world were in chaos after the stock market crash of October 1929.Many farmers in the Midwest could not repay their loans.They left their farms and moved west to California.
