"The small fire that had started just over an hour before had grown quite rapidly in size and strength.
Urged on by gusting winds and fueled by acres of crisp, dried grass,
it had raced forward, jumping ditches and small streams and evolving into the raging wall of flames before us.
Our job was to contain the fire perimeter, extinguishing all spot fires and flare-ups,
which are little fires that start from the big fire and add to it, before they swept out of control.
