Had all her brain cells died over summer vacation?Staring at the dough stuck to her fingers,Anna asked herself whatever could have made her think that she could help her mom bake a prizewinning pie.After trying for nearly an hour, she still couldn't roll a piecrust out so it would stay together.She'd tried patching the holes with extra bits of dough,but it ended up looking like the kind of crust Dr. Frankenstein might have cobbled together in his lab.

Frustrated, she scraped the dough off the wooden board and mashed it together again into one big, sticky lump.

"Gently, Anna, gently," Mrs. Willard said from her perch on a kitchen stool."If you want a delicate, flaky crust, you need to treat the dough delicately.Otherwise you end up with a crust that tastes as if you made it out of cardboard."
