Back at the building site, the hammering of stone and the shouts across the castle sounded like cheerful heralds to Col.Pushing the scene at the market to the back of his mind,he spent the rest of the day glued to his master's side, watching attentively, determined to make no mistakes.
Pleased to be in the sunshine, the workers were making the most of the good weather.Aldred was whistling as he squared each block,making sure the corners were in perfect symmetry, ready to be lifted into place.
Col felt sorry for the man on the windlass.He could see him heaving and groaning as he stood inside the giant wheel,turning it around and around with his weary steps, sweat dripping from his face.As the rope wrapped itself around the moaning, creaking wheel,the crate holding a block of stone slowly rose to the top of the wall.
Bigge was back on site, his head down, muttering angrily to himself, and Col wondered if he were ever happy.He watched Bigge out of the corner of his eye.The man was chiseling stone at the base of the wall right beside them, all alone as usual.
The rope attached to the windlass began to creak louder than usual.Col looked up, brow furrowed. The crate holding the block of stone seemed to shudder.
Col leaped to his feet. "Watch out!" he screamed.
