Getting to Know Your Neighbors
Yun enjoyed everything that she learned at school.Hardly a day went by that she didn't learn something new and interesting.The person who made it all so much fun was her teacher, Mr. Etienne, and everybody loved him.
The class had been learning about wonderful people and places that were far away.Mr. Etienne started the day by saying, "Today I am going to give you a project that will help us all get to know our neighbors a little better.It's time to learn more about the people that live near us."
Mr. Etienne wanted them to learn about people in their neighborhood who helped other people."You may want to ask your parents to help you find someone to talk to," said Mr. Etienne."Then you will give a report to the class about these important people."
Mr. Etienne explained that they would work in pairs so that they could help each other.
Mr. Etienne began to announce the pairs.Yun was excited about the project, but she was also worried about who her partner would be.Then Mr. Etienne announced, "Yun and Berto will be partners."
Yun smiled when she heard Berto say, "Yes," but she was a little worried about working with her friend.Berto always seemed to be in a hurry to finish, while Yun liked thinking things through before doing anything.Yun wondered if they would be able to work together.
Time was given during class to begin talking about the projects.Berto and Yun tried to think of people to interview, but they couldn't think of anyone."This is harder than I thought!" exclaimed Berto."Maybe we should do what Mr. Etienne said and talk to our parents."
Yun thought Berto's idea was a good one.They planned to call each other after dinner that night.
Grandfather was cooking dinner that night.The wonderful taste of Grandfather's meal almost made Yun forget to talk about her school project."It has to be someone who helps other people in the neighborhood,"Yun reminded them after describing the whole project.
She listened as the four adults talked about all of the different neighbors who might be able to help.Yun didn't know any of the people they named.
"I know the perfect person," Mother suggested."You could talk to Mr. Roldan.He created the literacy center at the library,and I hear that a lot of people interested in learning to read go there for help."
That sounded perfect to Yun, and she could hardly wait to call him.She was so excited that she leaped out of her chair.Father laughed and reminded her that they needed to finish dinner before they called him.Father said that he would take her to talk with Mr. Roldan over the weekend.
Finally dinner was finished and Father called Mr. Roldan.As he hung up the phone, Father was smiling.He told Yun that he would take her to speak with Mr. Roldan on Saturday.Yun called Berto right away with the good news.
"That's great, " cried Berto, "and guess what? I forgot that my mother has a friend who helps neighborhood people.We are going to talk with her on Saturday, too!"
The library was one of Yun's favorite places to visit.She loved the way the old building looked, and the smell of the books made her want to read every single one that was in the library.
Mr. Roldan was waiting for Yun and her father in his office.He said, "Hello," and asked her how he could help with her exciting project.Yun described her project, and Mr. Roldan explained that the literacy center was there to help people with their reading and writing.
