Jenny's Habitat

“Next Thursday is Visiting Day,” said Ms. Carlson.

“Visitors will come to our classroom.

How should we decorate for them?”

“We could put up balloons,” said Sam.

“Let's paint frogs on the floor,” said Pete.

“I thought we should do something that shows what we're learning,” said Ms. Carlson.

“We could do something about habitats,” suggested Jenny.

“We could make dioramas of different habitats,” said Ms. Carlson.

“What are dioramas?” asked Sam.

“They are models of places,” said Ms. Carlson.

“I'll show you one.”

Ms. Carlson took out a small box.

Inside was a model of a farm.

There was a plastic red barn.

There were cows and horses made of clay.

There was paper grass that made a meadow.

“We can go to the library,” said Ms. Carlson.

“You can look at books to help you choose your habitats.”

Later, everyone was whispering about their ideas.

Nina decided to make a desert habitat.

“I'll put sand in my diorama,” said Nina.

“I'll make lizards and snakes.

I'll try to make cactus plants.”

“That's a good idea,” said Jenny.

“I wish I had thought of it.”

Sam decided to make a Polar Regions diorama.

“I'll have lots of snow,” said Sam.

“I'll use toy polar bears and penguins.

I'll paint an ocean on one side.

Then I'll put paper blocks of ice and seals in the ocean.”

“That's great,” said Jenny.

Pete was planning to do an underwater diorama.

“I'll paint the sea blue in my diorama,” said Pete.

“Then I'll make fish and sea turtles.

I'll put sand on the bottom with wild sea plants.”

“I still don't know what to make,” said Jenny.
