At dinner, the family talked about what was happening in Mexico.
"Can we walk to school by ourselves?" Ana asked.
"After President Díaz resigned, I thought things were going to be better," José said.
José's mother, Maria, explained that people were fighting over who would be the next president.
"I'm afraid the country will be at war for a long time.Maybe we should move to California," Diego suggested.
José was surprised. His father explained, "The government won't be building bridges or roads. It will be difficult to find work."
Maria, said, "There may be more opportunities in California. They need engineers like your father to work on the new railroad."
Maria sounded positive, but she looked sad.
The next day at school, Ana looked around her class. She would miss her friends if she left Mexico.Ana heard a girl talking about California. At lunch break, Ana talked to the girl.
"Is your family moving to California?" Ana asked.
The girl replied, "My dad thinks we would be safer there. I'm excited, but scared, too."
That night, Ana told her family about her classmate.
Ana's father said, "Many people are leaving. We should leave soon."
