Chapter 1 Winning Is Everything
"Okay, class, listen up!" called Mrs. Williams."We're going to have a School Olympics at the end of the month." All the kids cheered.
"I need everyone to get into four teams," she said."Who would like to be a team captain?"
Cody's hand shot up. He desperately wanted to be a captain.He was excited when Mrs. Williams called his name.
Cody chose his friends Zack and Jessica to be on his team first.Next he chose Jada, who was a great runner.
Then Mrs. Williams said, "River, you join Cody's team."
Cody's heart sank. He didn't know River very well, but he seemed to mess around a lot.
"Remember - real winners in sports are those who do their best, even if they don't win," Mrs. Williams told the teams."I advise you to give each other a chance."
"Mrs. Williams is right," River said quietly."My dad always says that having fun and giving it your best shot is better than winning."
"Nothing is better than winning," Cody mumbled.
Chapter 2 Cody Is Annoyed
Cody's team practiced every day after school.They ran and jumped. They climbed and crawled over surfaces like human geckos.River enjoyed that. "Maybe too much," Cody thought.
One time they were practicing for the relay race.As Jessica ran up to pass River the baton, he was balancing on a bench.When Cody got angry, River shrugged and walked away.
