It was Julio's first day at his new school, and he was nervous.Julio was led to his new classroom by Ms. Alford, the school principal. She said something to him, but Julio didn't understand her.He understood a little English, but Ms. Alford talked very fast, so it was hard for him to understand what she was saying.
“This is a new student, Julio Nogales,” Ms. Alford told the class, “and he is from Mexico.”
Julio saw some of the other students whisper to each other. He wished that he had a friend in the class to say, “Julio, sit by me!”
Ms. Lau, Julio's teacher, pointed to a desk and said, “You can sit next to Sim.”
Julio smiled at Sim, but Sim looked away.“I guess he doesn't want me to sit here,” thought Julio.
Ms. Lau said something to Julio, but she spoke so fast that he didn't understand her. Then Sim reached across his desk and placed paper and a pencil in front of Julio.
“Thanks,” Julio whispered. Sim nodded and then looked away again.Julio wondered why Sim didn't smile at him.“He must not like me,” thought Julio.
Ms. Lau asked if anyone knew how to multiply 12 times 13.Julio understood and raised his hand.
“Julio, what is the answer?” asked Ms. Lau.
“It is 156,” Julio answered. “Very good, Julio,” said Ms. Lau.A boy and a girl sitting across from Julio whispered to each other and laughed.Julio hoped that they weren't laughing at him.
At lunchtime Julio went to the lunchroom, but no one seemed to notice him.Julio sat down at an empty table.
Sim walked past Julio and sat at a table by himself. Julio felt very lonely.
When lunchtime was almost finished, one of the lunchroom workers, Ms. Olson, saw Julio and asked, “How are you doing?”
“I'm not doing very well,” Julio replied.“Sometimes people talk too fast, and I can't understand all of the English words.Other times I think that kids are laughing at me.Even though I smiled at Sim, I don't think that he likes me.”
