Long ago in a small village near a forest, there lived a kind old woman.One day the woman was working in her garden, when she saw a sparrow fall from its nest in a tree.
“Oh, you poor little sparrow! You have hurt your wing!”The woman picked up the bird.“If you don't mind living with me, and if you don't mind eating my food,then you can stay with me until your wing is better.”
The woman found a soft pillow and carefully placed the sparrow on it.Every day the woman fed the sparrow some rice from her own bowl and water from her own cup.“Here, little sparrow. This food will make you strong,” said the woman.
After a while, the sparrow grew strong again.So the woman took the bird outside and set it free.
“Goodbye, my little friend,” the woman said sadly as she watched the sparrow fly off into the forest.
Soon spring came again. One morning the sparrow returned.It dropped a watermelon seed in the woman's garden while she was caring for her plants.
“Thank you for the gift!” the woman called out.She waved goodbye to the sparrow as it flew away.
