When Gina came home from school on Monday, Maman handed her a box wrapped in brown paper.
"Look, it's a package from Grann—all the way from Haiti!" Gina exclaimed.
Gina shook the box carefully, trying to guess what might be inside. Her cat, Lucky, hopped up next to her as she started to unwrap the box.Lucky had belonged to Grann when he was a kitten. It almost seemed like Grann was right there in the room with them when Lucky was around.
Inside the box was a book with a date on each page.
"Grann sent you a day planner," Maman said."You can use it to keep track of what you have to do every day."
Gina watched as Lucky touched the planner with his paw.
"I can't wait to start writing things in my planner," Gina said.
"You have to go to the dentist at 4:30 tomorrow," said Maman, "so you could write that in your planner."
Even though Gina wasn't looking forward to seeing the dentist, she wrote "Dentist at 4:30" in her planner on the page for Tuesday.
"That's not very exciting," she said, and Lucky purred in agreement.
On Tuesday morning, Gina thought of something else that she wanted to write in her planner. She opened the book, then shrieked. Something strange had happened"Dentist at 4:30" had changed to "Town Square at 4:30"!
Gina rushed into the kitchen. "Maman," she cried, "did you write in my planner?"
"No, Gina," Maman said. "Hurry up and get dressed, or you'll be late for school."
As she nervously returned to her room, Gina saw Lucky sitting near the planner, licking his paws.
After school that day, Gina was picked up by Maman.
"The dentist wants you to come on another day, so I decided that I would take you to the fair today in the Town Square."
Gina thought to herself, "Town Square at 4:30.That was what the planner had said, and I thought that it was incorrect!"
At the fair, there were displays from countries around the world, and one table had art, music, and food from Haiti.
"Grann would love this," cried Gina."They even have pain patate, her favorite sweet potato bread."
"Yes, Gina," Maman said with delight, "it almost feels like Grann is here with us."
When they got home, Gina went to her room and saw the planner sitting on her bed, even though she didn't remember leaving it there.
Lucky sat nearby, licking his paws.
Gina turned the page to Wednesday and wrote "Go to Lisa's house after school.Lisa was Gina's best friend. Gina wondered if something weird might happen to her planner that night!
On Wednesday morning, Gina found Lucky curled up on her planner. She moved him aside. As she looked at her planner, she saw that "Go to Lisa's house after school" now read "Explore the attic"!
