One sunny afternoon, the children on Clark Street were playing outside, but Lai Jun stayed inside drawing pictures.Lai Jun and her family had just moved to the neighborhood. She was the new girl at school.Lai Jun wanted to go outside, but she was afraid that the kids wouldn't want to play with someone new.
“Don't you want to play outside?” Lai Jun's mother asked her.“Maybe you can meet some new friends.”
“I think I'll just finish my drawing,” answered Lai Jun.
The next day at school, Jackie, Juanita, and Curtis were playing soccer. It looked like fun, but instead of joining them, Lai Jun drew in her notebook.
“Let's ask Lai Jun to play,” Juanita said to her friends.
“She doesn't talk to us,” said Curtis, “so I think she wants to be alone.”
On her way home from school that day, Lai Jun noticed something shiny on the sidewalk. She bent down to see what it was and saw a colorful pen.Lai Jun looked around to see if anyone was looking for a lost pen, but nobody else was nearby.Lai Jun thought about the beautiful drawings that she would make with the pen.
When she got home, Lai Jun started her homework. As she read about butterflies in her science book, she drew pictures of them on her paper with her new pen.Suddenly something orange floated by and flew out the window.Lai Jun looked up in surprise. It was one of her butterflies!
Then she read about horses.Lai Jun began to draw horses with long manes and silky tails. As she finished drawing a pretty purple horse, she heard a loud sound outside.
When she looked out the window, a purple horse was looking up at her!
Lai Jun asked her mother if she could go outside to play. Her mother smiled and nodded, thrilled that Lai Jun was making friends. Then Lai Jun put her pen and some paper in her pocket and ran outside.
She slowly climbed on the horse's back, then listened to the clip, clop of the horse's feet as it rode away.Even though she had never been on a horse before, she didn't feel afraid.Something special was happening to her!
Lai Jun rode to the park, where Jackie and Juanita were playing. When the girls saw Lai Jun, they jumped off their swings and shouted, “Hi, Lai Jun!”
“Is that your horse?” Jackie asked as she stared at Lai Jun.
“Yes,” answered Lai Jun. “Would you like to ride with us?”
“Oh yes, thank you!” replied Jackie and Juanita.Lai Jun helped them climb on the horse, and the girls went on a ride through the park.
