For days and weeks and months, the girls' mother searched the lands around her home,
calling out each daughter's name hopefully.
But the daughters never answered. They were gone.
And their mother never found any clues of where they might be.
Finally, she gave up her search. Instead, she focused all of her attention on little Francis.
Nothing would happen to him, she pledged to herself.
