Chapter 2 Spring Storm
That night, a loud thunderclap woke Amy.The booming noise seemed to shake the whole house. It was raining cats and dogs, and the sound of rain striking the roof was deafening.
Amy peered into the garden and saw a lightning flash, which lit up the oak tree and the bird feeders. She could see the birds in the tree, desperately clinging onto the branches.
Amy was halfway down the hallway when her father saw her."You can't go outside in this weather, Amy," he said. "Want some hot chocolate?"
Soon Amy was curled up on the sofa with her bird book and a mug of hot chocolate. She knew that the birds would survive - they were used to weathering terrible storms.
The next morning, Amy and her dad went into the yard to inspect the damage from the thunderstorm.A branch had snapped off the oak tree, and two bird feeders had fallen to the ground.
Immediately Amy and her dad got to work filling the remaining feeders with food.Later as Amy and her dad ate their breakfast, they observed the birds swooping down to eat from the feeders.
"It's a relief to see that the birds are safe and sound," said Amy.
As she and her dad walked to school, Amy was pleased she had decided to wear her boots.Slippery leaves and twigs were scattered along the sidewalk, and Amy and her dad had to avoid several enormous puddles. At school, leaves and branches were strewn everywhere.
Amy said good-bye to her dad and asked him to check on the birds when he arrived home.
