Chapter 2 The Tiger, the Brahman, and the Jackal

One day Jackal settled down to rest in some tall grass just outside a jungle. But soon his peaceful day was shattered by the sound of a snapping twig.Jackal's ears stood up alertly and he sniffed the air.Something was approaching, sneaking up on him from somewhere in the jungle. Suddenly... snap! Whoosh! Thud!

A bamboo cage came crashing down out of a tree.It had fallen right on top of the approaching animal.A closer look revealed that a great and fearsome tiger had sprung the trap!

Jackal shivered to think that he had nearly been a tiger's lunchand then felt lucky to have been preserved from such an awful fate. Then he began to laugh. This was really pretty amusing - the hunter had become the hunted!

As Tiger bit and clawed at the cage, growling angrily,Jackal returned to his spot in the grass to watch what would happen next.

After a half hour a Brahman came walking along the road.He wore a plain tan wrap. Wire-framed glasses glittered on his wise face.

Jackal was fond of the Brahman. He was a good and kind man who would always share his last morsel of food.Jackal was glad that Tiger was no longer free to harm him. When the Brahman came to Tiger, though, he stopped and spoke to him.Tiger was asking him something. At first the old man shook his head.

Jackal could see that Tiger was wearing his most charming smile and the Brahman was starting to look a bit undecided.Jackal realized what was going on.

Tiger was persuading the Brahman to free him from the cage!

"No!" Jackal thought in alarm. "Don't do it. He'll eat you the moment you set him free."

Jackal got to his feet and crept closer. He twisted his ears forward to listen.

"Do you truly promise not to eat me if I free you?" the Brahman asked Tiger. "Absolutely," Tiger said smoothly.

"All right then," the Brahman agreed as he began to open the cage.In seconds Tiger sprang through the cage door.
