Chapter 1A Bad Time

My name is Eva.These are some of the entries in my diary.I wrote them when we lived in Berlin, Germany.

April 1, 1933

Uncle Frank came over for dinner.He was worried.He looked much older, and his face was so wrinkled.Nathan and I were sent to bed early.We knew something was wrong, so we sat at the top of the stairs and listened.

Uncle Frank told Mama and Papa that the Nazis had come to his store.They painted black across his doors.Then they posted signs that said: "Don't Buy from Jews."

April 7, 1933

Now it's Papas turn to be worried.The government has passed a law.It says that he can't be a college professor anymore because he's Jewish.

Uncle Frank has offered Papa a job in his shoe store.Papa says he's lucky to have work.But I can tell he doesn't really want to work there.

May 11, 1933

Mama took me and Nathan to the playground.There was a big sign outside that said: "Jews Not Allowed "

Mama took me and Nathan by the hand.We turned around and went back home.I could tell Mama was very angry.I was sad because I had wanted to play hopscotch with my friends.

A few blocks away, we saw huge fires in the street.The orange flames looked bright against the blue sky.

Mama told us not to look.She said the Nazis were burning books.

When we got home, I lay on my bed and hugged my diary.I thought about how I would feel if someone burned my books.I started to cry.
