Patty Jumps! Patty Jumps! Chapter 1 Jumping Rope “Yay! It's finally recess!” Patty shouts. Patty heads for the swing set. Her friend Ella picks up a jump rope. “Come on! Let's jump!” says Ella. Patty stops smiling. Jumping rope is the last thing she wants to do. But before she can say a word, Shane and Frankie grab the jump rope handles. “We'll turn the rope,” says Shane. “Thanks! Chapter 1 Jumping Rope
“Yay! It's finally recess!” Patty shouts.
Patty heads for the swing set.Her friend Ella picks up a jump rope.
“Come on! Let's jump!” says Ella.
Patty stops smiling.Jumping rope is the last thing she wants to do.But before she can say a word,Shane and Frankie grab the jump rope handles.
“We'll turn the rope,” says Shane.
“Thanks! Can I go first?” asks Ella.
The rope starts to spin.Ella keeps up.Patty gets dizzy just watching.
Ella says, “Patty, now it's your turn.”
Patty doesn't move.
“Come on, Patty!” says Frankie.
“Let's chant a rhyme my mom taught me,” says Ella.“She used it when she jumped rope as a kid.It goes like this: Apples, peaches, pears, and plums.Tell me when your mother comes.”
Patty steps into the spinning rope.Before she can jump, it hits her feet.
“I just can't jump rope.It's too difficult for me,” thinks Patty.
She steps away to give Frankie a turn.
Later, Patty and her friends go to Shane's house.They jump more rope.
“Listen to this rhyme,” Frankie says.“My dad taught it to me.I can jump. One, two, and three.Come in, Ella, jump with me.”
“This is fun!” Ella says.“I've never jumped with another person before.Patty, do you want to try?”
Patty feels a flutter in her stomach.
“I'd like to,” she says, “but . . .”
Shane's mom calls out, “Hey, everyone!Come have some water and snacks!”
“Maybe a break will help,” Patty thinks.
