Chapter 1 A Social Studies Lesson
Harry was almost 10 years old and he loved baseball. As he walked to school, he thought about his birthday party. His mother had planned the party. At the party, there would be a cake in the shape of a baseball and baseball caps.He and his friends would play baseball. His parents had hired a magician to entertain everyone.
Harry thought, "It's going to be a great party! I can't wait."
At school, Harry daydreamed about his party."Harry, have you been listening? What can you tell me about Eleanor Roosevelt?" asked the teacher.
Harry thought quickly. "Eleanor Roosevelt was First Lady of the United States. Now she works for human rights. My mom thinks Eleanor Roosevelt is wonderful. She named my sister Anna after her."
The teacher said, "Very good. Now Eleanor Roosevelt represents our country at the United Nations."
After school, Harry went to the recreation center. He played table tennis with his friend, Gary. They talked about Harry's party.
Harry said, "I'm inviting 10 friends. And a magician is coming!"
"That sounds like fun. I wish I could have a party," said Gary.
"Ask your folks if you can have a party," said Harry.
"They can't afford a party this year," Gary said.
"You can come to my party," Harry replied.
On the way home, Harry remembered that Eleanor Roosevelt organized dances for kids in New York City. Then Harry had a great idea.He could hold his birthday party for all the boys and girls at the recreation center.Every kid with a birthday this month could come. The parents could make the food.He decided to ask his parents what they thought.
At dinner, Harry talked to his family about his idea.Anna did not like the idea. She thought there would be too many kids. But his parents thought it would be fun. Harry was excited.
"Oh boy! It's going to be the best party ever!" he said. His father responded, "Don't get too excited, son. Hold your horses. We'll have to see what the other parents think about your idea."
"Okay, Dad," said Harry. "I will hold my horses. But I'm excited."
