Introduction

On the eastern shore of Lake Michigan are sparkling white sand dunes.The highest dune bluff overlooks the lake and two small islands- the North and South Manitou (MA-nuh-tew) Islands.Today we know that glaciers and strong winds created the bluff and the islands.But the Ojibwe (oh-JIB-way) Native Americans who lived in the forests beyond the duneshad a different story for how the bluff and the islands came to be.

The Ojibwe stories not only explained how things came to be.They also taught important lessons about how to live.Their stories were often about Nanaboozhoo (na-na-BEWZ-hew), who was sometimes a trickster.The Ojibwe legends also included the Great Spirit,a being who had created the world around them and watched over them.The Ojibwe explained the formation of the dunes and Manitou Islands in the legend of the "Sleeping Bear Dunes."In the legend of "Turtle Island," Nanaboozhoo and the animals save Earth.

Chapter 1 Sleeping Bear Dunes

One morning two fat bear cubs raced out of their den.They saw their mother scratching her back on a white birch tree nearby.The cubs ran to her. She licked their shiny black fur. They were ready for breakfast.

The mother bear led her cubs through the forest.Every so often she looked back to check on them. Sometimes she sniffed the air.The cubs played among the leaves as they followed her.A bird soared over the cubs and they looked up at it.

When they arrived at the river, the cubs jumped in."Be careful," the mother bear said. Now it was time for the lesson.The mother bears paw went quickly in and out of the water.The cubs stared in amazement at the plump, pink fish in her paw.How did she do it? After a few clumsy tries, they finally caught their own fish.
