Once, a long time ago, animals plowed the fields and planted crops for food, just as people do today.But one year, during the growing season, the rains didn't come.Day after day, the hot, hot sun burned down on the fields.Nothing could grow.
There was no food to eat and no water to drink except in one place.That place was Clayton Field.
Clayton Field had plenty of fruits and vegetables to eat.A spring bubbled with clear, cool water to drink.And who enjoyed all this goodness?A well-fed tiger! Brer Tiger was his name.
One day, the animals traveled to Clayton Field to ask Brer Tiger to share his food and water with them.There in his cozy home was Brer Tiger.He was stretched out in the shade of a pear tree.
When Brer Tiger saw all those animals a-coming his way, he stood up tall."Stay away from my field," he growled, "or I'll have you for my dinner!"
The animals were too afraid to argue.They went home still hungry and thirsty.
