One sad day, Rosa's mother died.Rosa and Papa cried many tears, but barely a year later, Papa married a woman named Lupe.His new wife had a pretty daughter named Anita, and when Papa was not around, Lupe and Anita were mean to Rosa.
The family was poor, and Lupe, who didn't like Rosa, sent Rosa to ask the governor for work.The governor lived many miles away, and it took Rosa several days to walk across the desert to his house.
When the governor's maid Elva opened the door, she had a mean look on her face that made Rosa think of Lupe.
"Do you need someone who can sew?" asked Rosa.
Elva answered, "You may work here, but you must never bother the governor's family."
As Rosa followed Elva through the house, Rosa saw a picture of a handsome young man with kind-looking brown eyes.
"That's the governor's son, David," said Elva."Remember that you must do your work and never bother the family."
Rosa never saw David because he was very busy.Rosa was also very busy because she was making a rebozo for David's mother, the Senora.To make the shawl beautiful, Rosa used purple yarn.While she worked, Rosa sang her song about the purple mountains.
One day the Senora sat in the garden where Rosa worked.The Senora seemed lonely, so Rosa spoke to her.The Senora was very happy to have a visitor, and she told Rosa all about her son.Rosa learned that David worked very hard and was kind to everyone.
When Elva realized how much time Rosa and the Senora were spending together, she became worried that the Senora might give her job to Rosa.Elva grew angry and made a plan to get Rosa into trouble.
