Chapter 1 The Pictures

Shatima and Jamal were on their back porch looking at magazines.

"I really like these pictures of tree houses," Shatima said. "I wish we had one."

"We have a tree," Jamal said. "I'll bet we could build a tree house."

"Mom and Dad won't let us," Shatima said.

"You are probably right," said Jamal."They'll come up with some reason we can't do it."

Katrina, their friend who lived next door, came over."What are you reading about?" she asked.

"Tree houses," Shatima said. "We want to build one, but Mom and Dad won't go for it," Jamal said.

"Try them," Katrina said. "You'll never know unless you ask."

That night, at dinner, Shatima asked, "Mom could we build a tree house?"

"I'm not sure," said their mother. "It could be dangerous, and you might fall."

"Mom!" Jamal exclaimed. "We climb up that tree all the time."

"They could learn a lot about building," their father said."It would take careful planning, though."

"Where will you get the wood to build it?" their mother asked.

"We'll find some," Shatima said. "I can help you," their father said."I have a few pieces in the storage bin in the garage."

"You mean, we can really build it?" asked Jamal.

"It's a great idea," said their father.

"I knew Katrina was right," said Shatima."All we had to do was ask." Jamal just smiled.

Chapter 2 The Plan

"Told you," said Katrina. "I knew they would say yes.I was so sure that I drew these pictures. What do you think?"
