The crowd around the front desk slowly shrank. Some stayed near the door, watching the rain come down.Others wandered away. Mark's phone rang. It was Mom.
"Hi Mark," she said. "I'm having trouble getting there -"
"-because of the floods," Mark said. "They just made an announcement."
"Just try to be patient," Mom said. "I'm positive it won't last much longer. If you need any help, talk to the librarians. I'll call you when I hear the roads are clear."
"We'll be fine," Mark said. "See you later."
"Mom said to be patient and to ask the librarians if we need help," Mark told Alicia.
"We don't know the librarians here," said Alicia."We don't know anyone here," she thought. She felt frustrated and angry. Her whole world was filled with unfamiliar names and places. She longed for something or someone she knew - even if it was just Ms. Ramirez back at the library in Florida.
"Well, I don't feel like just sitting," Alicia said. "I'm going to walk around."
"I guess I will too," Mark said. "Maybe there are vending machines around here someplace."
Alicia went toward the stacks to find a book to read - but something in the picture-book section caught her eye.Alicia stopped and picked up a book that she remembered from when she and Mark were about three or four years old.It was one of their favorites. A story about a dog who switched places with a little girl.
"What are you reading?" a voice behind her asked.
Alicia turned around. It was Julie, one of the girls from her class. Alicia felt her face redden. Here was a potential friend - and she'd caught Alicia in the baby section of the library, reading a picture book.Alicia knew it must look odd. Julie took the book and flipped through the pages.
She pointed to the one of the dog taking a nap at a desk in a classroom.
"That was my favorite picture," she said. "I loved this book!"
"Me too," Alicia said shyly. "I liked it when Fluff tried to play soccer."
"Oh, right," laughed Julie. "Your name is Alicia, right? You're in my class. You don't say a lot."
"It's hard getting used to a new place," said Alicia. "It's so different here."
"You're from Florida, right?" Julie asked. "I guess you went to the beach all the time."
"Yes," said Alicia. "I swam a lot too. And I played basketball."
