Roberto was still staring at the dog and its cage when the mice started squeaking with terror. "Hide! Hide now!"
Roberto quickly hid under the bed.He heard loud footsteps coming toward the bedroom door. Then the door opened.
Roberto peeked out from under the bed. It was the giant's daughter. She was as tall as Roberto's house. And she had long black hair."She doesn't look too mean," Roberto thought. He was about to ask her if she would give him the dog when she looked in the mirror and smiled. She had sharp, pointed teeth. Roberto scurried back under the bed.
"Adelaide," said a woman's voice. "Are you in your bedroom?"
"Yes, Mother," said the giant's daughter.
"Good," said the mother. She walked into the bedroom."Don't forget to clean the dog's cage today."
"I won't, Mother," Adelaide said.
The mother sniffed. "I smell something," she said."Have you been hiding humans in here again?"
Roberto pressed himself against the wall.He hoped the giant woman wouldn't look under the bed and find him eavesdropping. "No, Mother," said Adelaide.
"Well, if you see any humans, throw them down a tree into another world," the mother said."They're such nasty little creatures." "I will, Mother."
The mother left. Adelaide put the dog on her bed and cleaned its cage. The dog whined to get down, but it was too far for him to jump. When Adelaide was done, she put the dog back in his cage and shut the door. Then she left the room.
Roberto stayed under the bed to think. How could he rescue the dog?
