Yun and Jen were both excited about their cousin Wai coming to spend the afternoon with them.Wai and Yun were the same age, and they both loved to play soccer.Yun knew that she and Wai would have fun together.Yun was already dressed to play soccer!
When Jen saw her sister holding her soccer ball, she said,“I want to play with Wai, too, but you know that I'm not a very good soccer player.Couldn't we play a game or draw pictures instead?”
Yun ignored her sister's suggestions as the doorbell rang.“Cousin Wai is here!” Yun exclaimed as she ran to the door to say hello to Wai and Wai's father, Uncle Kwok.
Wai had her soccer ball, too, and she and Yun laughed as they talked about the fun that they would have together. After Uncle Kwok left, Yun and Wai went into the kitchen for a snack. They left Jen alone by the door with her crayons and her drawing paper. They had forgotten about her.
Jen tried to hide her tears as she went to where Grandmother was reading.
"Yun and Wai don't want to play with me,” Jen told Grandmother."Yun didn't even listen when I told her that we could play games together or draw pictures.”
Grandmother smiled. “What does your father always do when you feel left out?”
“He finds something that Yun and I both like to do,” said Jen.
“Exactly!” said Grandmother. “Now try to think of something that could be fun for all of you.”
Even though Yun didn't like to draw as much as Jen did, they both liked to read.Jen went to her room and chose some books. She carried as many books as she could to the kitchen where Yun and Wai were eating.
“Who wants to read?” Jen asked as she carefully put the books on the table.
“No thanks,” said Wai, “we're going outside.”
“Why don't you read something and tell us about later?”Yun suggested on their way out the door.Jen was alone again.
Jen started to read, but she couldn't stop thinking about Yun and Wai having fun outside.Even though she wasn't very good at soccer, she wanted to play with them, so she went outside, too.
“That looks like fun,” said Jen as she watched Yun and Wai kick the ball back and forth. It bounced on the ground, in the air, and over their heads.
“I can kick a ball,” said Jen. “Can I play with you?”
“You're too small,” said Wai. “You might get hurt, and then we'd be in trouble.”
