Chapter 1 A Budding Artist
Alex was born in 1956 in Prague, in Czech Republic, formerly Czechoslovakia.His parents were well-known artists so Alex learned to draw when he was very young.As a little boy he was always drawing.

By the time Alex was ten he had filled lots of notebooks with drawings.
"I think you will be an artist one day, like your parents," his teacher said.
Alex drew this cartoon when he was ten.
Chapter 2 Tanks Invade Prague
On 20th and 21st August 1968, when Alex was 12, something terrible happened.
Czechoslovakia was invaded by the Soviet Union.It happened very quickly. There were tanks everywhere.There were even tanks in the school playground.
"Why have you invaded us?" the children shouted at the soldiers.
Alex's parents were very worried.Life would not be the same any more.
They decided to leave the country.
Chapter 3 The Escape
One night they packed their car and escaped.They could only take a few things in some suitcases.They had to leave everything else behind.
They drove through the night.They took quiet roads through the forests.Alex and his sister were scared.They were afraid soldiers would stop them.
Chapter 4 The Family Come to England
So Alex and his family came to England.At first it was hard because Alex spoke only Czech.
He soon learned to speak English.At school he pretended he couldn't understand his teachers.In lessons Alex just drew pictures.

One day a teacher said, "I know you can understand me, Brychta.It's time to stop drawing and do some work!"
The teacher looked through Alex's sketchbook.He was amazed how good the drawings were.
"These are good enough to be published," he said.
