As Leila walked into the kitchen, she remembered something that she had to ask her mother."Everyone in my math group needs to bring craft sticks to school tomorrow. We're going to build a bridge," said Leila."Can you get them tonight on your way home from work?"
Mom sighed and said, "Leila, you always tell me at the last minute!" She shook her head."OK, I'll get some craft sticks at the art store on my way home from work.Write down the amount you need on a piece of paper and put it with my bag."
Leila wrote 1500 craft sticks on a piece of paper and put it on top of her mom's bag.
When Mom came home from work, Leila was surprised to see the huge pile of craft sticks on the table.Leila looked at them and said, "Wow!That looks like more than one hundred fifty craft sticks!"
Mom sighed as she showed Leila the small piece of paper."Leila, you wrote one thousand five hundred."
"What do you mean?" Leila asked."1-5-0-0. That's one thousand five hundred," Mom said, pointing to each numeral as she spoke.
"But don't two zeros on the end of a number mean hundred?" Leila asked, confused.
"Sometimes it does, but not always," Mom answered. "Let me show you."
Mom showed Leila the number that she had written."Numerals mean different things depending on their place in the number. We call that place value."
"The first place is the ones place."
"The second place is the tens place."
