Chapter 1 Something Special
My favorite class is art. Today the teacher told us to draw something that was precious to us.I wanted to ask the teacher what she meant, but I didn't. I'm a new student. It is difficult to be the new kid. I just started drawing.
Mia sits next to me. She leaned over and looked at my drawing.Mia said, "That's a great design, Anjali. I've never seen anything like it." I smiled and nodded.
Mia said, "I really like the bright colors and shapes."
I said, "Thanks. It's called Rangoli. It is a good luck symbol. We draw it to celebrate Diwali." Mia asked, "Celebrate what?"
I smiled and said, "Diwali. It's a festival. It happens every year.We celebrate it with lights, fireworks, and good food."
Mia laughed and said, "That sounds like fun."
I wanted to invite Mia to celebrate the Diwali festival with my family.Mia was kind. I wanted to be friends with her.
Chapter 2 Light and Dark
After school, I asked Dad, "Can I invite Mia over for Diwali?"
Dad said, "Of course." He was preparing Diwali lamps and lanterns.
"Mia might think Diwali is strange. She doesn't know anything about it," I said.
Dad stopped what he was doing. "Why do we put all these lamps out?"
"To light up the house!" I replied.
Dad smiled. "You are right. In our culture, they are a tradition. They remind us that learning new things is like ‘seeing the light.'We believe it brings good luck. Everyone can celebrate Diwali."
