Ryoko arrived the next afternoon while I was at school.I jumped off the school bus half expecting her to be standing there to meet me,but she wasn't there, and when I went inside, Mom said she was upstairs in her room.I must have looked disappointed because Mom explainedthat Ryoko was tired after the long journey and was taking a nap.
If I had just arrived in a new country, I wouldn't be resting - I would be too excited to sleep.
By dinnertime, Ryoko still had not come downstairs, and I was really worried.Maybe it wasn't just animals and asparagus she didn't like, but rather the entire place.
I looked absentmindedly out the window at the rolling hills and long, straight fences.I liked the shape of the land and the shadows of the trees on the grass.I liked the shard of silver where the river widened to form a pool.Here the cattle could quench their thirst until they couldn't drink another drop.I also liked the faraway pointed cone hats of the massive grain silos.
But what if all you had ever known were skyscrapers, malls, and bright lights?I slumped onto a chair. No wonder Ryoko was still in her room!
