Chapter 1 "Mom, I Want a Dog!"

Charlie was almost nine, and he had wanted a pet since he was three.Emma, his best friend, had a dog. Josh had a dog and a cat.And today, Carlos had told him all about his fish."It just wasn't fair," Charlie thought as he rode the school bus home.Everybody had a pet except him.

When Charlie got off the bus, he went in the house and said, "Mom, I want a dog."

"Well, hello to you too," she said.

Charlie said, "Every one of my friends has a pet, and -

"Look, Charlie! We have talked about this before and we agree that a dog is a big responsibility."

"I know," said Charlie.

"A dog needs to be fed and walked every day," his mother said."A dog is not a toy you can suddenly decide you're tired of.Are you sure you can manage all that?"

Charlie said, "Yes, I'm sure."

His mother sighed. Charlie could tell she was thinking.He held his breath. "Please say yes," he thought.

Finally she spoke. "If you really want a dog, you're going to have to prove to me that you are responsible."

Charlie wanted to say, "Prove it how?"But he knew she had given him a challenge, and it was up to him to find a way to convince her.

She hadn't said no, after all, so there was still hope.But how could he prove he could take care of a dog when he didn't have one?
