Jae-Min and Grandpa Lee walked their bicycles on the sidewalk of Main Street. It was crowded with lots of people shopping.Suddenly Jae-Min and Grandpa heard a loud noise. They turned to find out where it came from.
“Look, Grandpa Lee!” said Jae-Min.Ahead of them, they saw food spilled everywhere.Jae-Min's friend Hana had crashed into Mr. Simon's vegetable stand with her bike.
Grandpa Lee helped Hana stand up.“Riding our bikes on the sidewalk isn't safe,” said Jae-Min, as he picked up a tomato from the ground.“We need a special lane on the street just for bikes.”
“Maybe it can become a law,” said Grandpa Lee.“You can make that happen, Jae-Min.”
“How can I do that, Grandpa?”
“Talk to people about how important the bike lane is.”
“We can start by writing a petition to tell people about your idea,” said Grandpa Lee.
“What's a petition?” asked Jae-Min.
“It's a letter asking for something. Then people who agree with the idea can sign the letter,” said Grandpa Lee.
Grandpa Lee helped Jae-Min write the petition.
Jae-Min and Grandpa Lee asked the people who worked and lived on Main Street to sign their petition. They got 52 people to sign it.
“Now let's take this to the people who help us with problems in our town,” said Grandpa Lee.“They are our town council members.”
Grandpa Lee and Jae-Min took the petition to the town council.
“In two weeks, we will talk about your idea at a meeting,” a member said.“You and other people from town can come to the meeting.”
